- The ‘ivory tower’ mentality: Because academics typically confine themselves to the intellectual study of their field, as opposed to its ‘real-life’, or ‘practical’ applications, they often are accused of living in what’s called an ‘ivory tower,’ whereby they’re detached from the real concerns of real people.
- Neglect of teaching: In academia, higher salaries and prestige are linked most directly to the quality and reception of one’s research and publishing (the phrase ‘publish or perish’ is common in academia). While this encourages innovative research, some worry that it downplays the role of teaching in an academic‘s career and diminishes the quality of his students’ education.
- The tenure system: Once an academic has earned tenure, it is very difficult for her institution to fire her (basically her job is protected unless she engages in some act of ‘moral turpitude,’ meaning that she behaves in some awful, unethical way). While this system is attractive to academics, it has led some to believe that a tenured professor has nothing to fear, and therefore, no real motivation to perform well professionally (meaning that she might neglect her students or other duties).
When you hear the word ‘academia’, however, chances are it is in reference to a narrower slice of that pie – specifically, that group of people who make their living or are in training to make their living as college professors, a group we call academics.
